Head Cases

Sometimes when I view the looks from a red carpet event, I wonder…

Did everyone coincidentally decide to wear a tikka head-piece or were all the stylists chatting at the Campari cooler (surely, celeb entourages can’t just be fed plain old water)?

Sisters are Do-ing it for themselves (with stylists, of course). But is it a Do or a Don't?

You need a certain grace to pull off forehead adornment. Think Indian maharani or ancient goddess – not Hollywood/fashion celebrity. It is not for the faint of art.

Darling, I know your mother goes to India a lot and I know they wear tikkas in India a lot, but that's where the similarity ends.

If one goes, one must go all the way.

I loved Stella McCartney’s vintage Cartier hairpiece – it added a lovely swirl to an otherwise minimalist dress and shoes.

Old world charm works – especially when it comes to hairstyles at these events. I had a deja-veronica when I saw these three ladies.

Nicole Ritchie had a similar idea.

But my fave hair had to be Ms. Kruger, who as always, worked that carpet like no one else. Wonder what films she’s actually been in lately?

I’m just a Complex girl…

…with a taste for simple, clean, uninterrupted lines.

And, I like a little dash of drama with my fash.

Thankfully Complex Geometries obliges my flare for the dare and divine.

Enlighten Me Satya Paul

I spent most of this weekend in the dark power outage due to the elements. After seeing grey for two days, I needed some intensity, just not in the weather this time. I needed englightenment.

No one else to turn to, but dear Satya Paul.

Wrapped in Mother Earth

This saree blends nature’s four elements in a fury of colour.

A serial modernist, Puneet Nanda pairs a dramatic saree with a streamlined silk jacket. Flourish at no extra charge.

Mataji? Not Me!

Taking it up a notch (or three), Nanda offers up sequins on print, creating a digitized, pixelated effect.

Digitized Diva

The digits get draped in this version. Versace could take lessons in colour from Puneet and his father, Satya Paul himself.

You're into colour, I gather?

There is no coyness here. These clothes say one thing: LIVE. And while you are at it, Do It In Colour!

Satya Paul couldn’t have said it better himself, wise sage that he is. Will do. I’m no longer in the dark…

Black and White is Golden

Black and white is bold this Spring, but who knew it was gold as well?

Love these delish baubles from Dries Van Noten. The rockin’ cuff softened with the romance of trailing ribbon, is screaming for some skinny jeans, a black, fitted bracelet sleeve t-shirt and a killer pair of simple black stilettos.

This clutch would be fantastic with a day shift dress in grey or leaf green, or a long skirted shirt dress à la Diane Lane in Under the Tuscan Sun when she is waiting for that lovely Italian man in the piazza Marcello?

dries-gold-clutch-ss09

Imagine the clutch tucked under her arm…

And this crazy, beautiful shirt would work with either a) faded, fitted and flared jeans + low key gold flat sandals, or b) a high-waisted floor length skirt with drape and fall that moves as you walk. I’d leave the buttons undone on the sleeves and casually flip the sleeves up. Simple hair, up. Done. Oh wait, since the sleeves are flipped up and the arms are bare, maybe add the spherical gold Bottega Veneta ring from a few seasons ago? Now, it’s done.

Or keep it fuss free in this Martin Grant pin-tucked column + gold string knot necklace. Not bad.

Embellished or not, it’s a golden opportunity to look sensational for Spring.

Red and black and goth all over

Who knew houndstooth and hummingbirds could hum?

Hounds of love.

I think I just wept.

Riveting red. Brilliant black. Gorgeous gothicism. Analysis once I recover, but here it is for your senses, as well.

Toronto…style? Take two.

Was there a sale?

Echoes of the Japanese look followed me all over Bloor Street.

span style=”font-family:”">Three women – all with ankle grazing, pleatless, wide pants and flat boots – all on one Saturday afternoon. In Toronto…not the Tuillieries.

Speaking of French beauty, one glided in with two teenage daughters in tow, as I sank my teeth into goat cheese drizzled with Provencal honey. What is it about French style that elegantly announces itself upon arrival into a room? It’s a fragrance, a breeze off the Côte d’Azur.

Pre-Falling for McQueen’s Victorian Dream

If there is perfection in this world, then it surely must look like this.

It’s London, 19th Century. Mossy cobblestones glisten with rain.

A heeled boot steps out of the carriage, a long leathered hand reaches for the rail, luxurious Italian wool kimono sleeves skim the steps.

Scent brushes by and the brim of the hat tilts just so. Drama emerges.

Suits me just fine.

This is Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2009.

Just when I think he can’t possibly outdo Tundra, or Hitchcock or floating Kate, he takes my breath away. Again.

Abigail Aldred (or some impossibly Victorian name that our heroine answers to) must change before she goes riding this afternoon. Which ensemble shall it be?

The tiered riding coat, the colour of wet country earth with rain-soaked plum flowers…

Tiers of Joy
Tiers of Joy
Just Dandy, foxy mama.

That's just dandy, foxy lady.

…or the haute highland jacket and fox stole…with (gush) jodhpurs…

The impossibility of choosing one for an afternoon could make a girl gothically pale.

Guests arriving for tea shortly? Quick change does the trick for Abigail or any modern fabulous creature…
