Déjà Vu: Why

Many things in fashion, we often just accept as what they are. The when, we place as the current moment in which we saw something, or perhaps relate it to a time in the past when a similar trend existed. The who, is the creator of the garment. The how, is the fabric, the technique. The where, comes from the city in which it is being shown, or where it was made.

But have you ever stopped to wonder about the why of fashion?

Earlier this evening, I attended a lecture at Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum about Yves Saint Laurent, given by Laurent Cotta of the Galliera in Paris. It was an evening of many oohs and aahs, as Monsieur Cotta shared his passionate knowledge of the beloved designer and his creations – someone he described as being synonymous with France. The talk included many anecdotes and interesting tidbits. I’ll share my notes with you in the form of future posts, as they trickle into tangible thoughts.

One interesting thing I learned tonight was about one of the most famous photographs in fashion.

Of course, I knew of Richard Avedon’s iconic Dovima with Elephants series.

Dovima with Elephants by Avedon on Exshoesme.com

Dovima with Elephants by Richard Avedon.

I knew, too that it was a Dior dress, as only the divine Dovima could wear.

I was aware that Saint Laurent had started his career as a designer at Dior.

What I didn’t know was that this particular Dior dress was designed by Yves, when he was Monsieur Dior’s assistant.

And while the pose is certainly memorable (there is no other Dovima, after all), I didn’t ever equate it to being in the shape of a Y.

Well, it is – and now you know precisely why.

Another photo of Dovima by Avedon, from the same series.

The pose showed up in another famous photo of Dovima in Dior (one of my absolute favourites of all time)…

Dovima in more Dior, designed by YSL.

[As an aside (and another déjà vu), the trailing wrap around the jacket seems to have been echoed by Alexander McQueen, in the kimono jacket/suit of my dreams, in his PF09 collection.]

It was also apparent during the course of the lecture – and really, has been, throughout my lifelong admiration of fashion – how much YSL has influenced the designers who followed. I’ll write, in future, about specific style elements that we can thank Monsieur Saint Laurent for.

The point, however, was emphatically reinstated before me, a few moments ago.

With tonight’s lecture still floating through my thoughts, I logged on to my laptop and searched through the day’s images from Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in Delhi. As I flipped through the grand finale show snaps, featuring one of my fave design duos from the Motherland - Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, I couldn’t believe what I was looking at.

But I knew Y.

Merci Monsieur Saint Laurent.

Zellweger was one of the first to start the vintage trend on the red carpet. This dress certainly is a memorable one.

Both are beautiful dresses – but a stylist somewhere is being scolded right now for not doing their homework.

Déjà Vu: Global Village

The World Wide Web has shrunk this wide world. It has shortened distances on maps, it has bridged borders and generally, brought people closer together.

Our village is indeed, global. Our possibilities are endless, as are our dreams.

The global landscape is ours to behold. And the language – a highly visual one – requires no translation.

Given the age we live in – given the amount of visuals at our disposal each and every day – I thought it was interesting that one woman in New York (a woman who knows all women, really) had a thought for Spring…

We all know Ms. Taylor loved her pearls and other baubles. Well, now her entire collection of gems is going up for auction in December. Christie’s in New York will be selling the 300 pieces, valued at over $30 million. And yes, The Ring is included amongst that number.

Save your pennies, darlings – and be extra sweet to your sugar daddies, if you have them.

Déjà Vu: Dovima vs. Ms. Moss

So while we wait for the September British Vogue, let’s review our August homework, shall we?

Here is the first shoot with Mrs. Hince – as photographed by Mario Testino for the August issue of the Vogue with the accent.

This might be the new Ms. Moss – but this whole editorial had me doing a déjà vu - a Dovima déjà vu.

It's all very lady-like, really. It fits us like, well, a glove.

Kate Moss by Mario Testino for British Vogue August 2011 on exshoesme (11)

The new power dressing - no need to blush - you, too can pull this off by putting it on. Pop tarts, take note.

The mass appeal of Dovima at the time, a Supermodel well before the word was coined, was undeniable. She defined elegance and wore clothes in a way that really allowed us to dream. These iconic photographs of her exemplify the very best in photography, in modeling, in style – in modernity – more than 60 years after they were taken.

The Moss appeal, too is undeniable. Since those images of a young Kate shot by Corinne Day and the emergence of Heroin Chic, this woman has carried us from the Supermodel heyday and grown up in front of our eyes.  While she and Mr. Testino surely give a nod to Dovima here, she too, is already an icon. Lover her or hate her, but her place in fashion history, in modeling history, in style – stands on record – and will stand the test of time – 60 years from now.

And incidentally, this isn’t the first time I’ve done a Dovima double take.

More Kate. And yes, yes, I owe you my thoughts on her nuptials. Getting caught up slowly….promise.

Déjà Vu: Clunky Shoe X 2

Maison Martin Margiela constantly pushes the limits of wearable footwear.

This season, the House that Martin built came up with an innovative pair of pumps.

This pair has a criss-cross ankle strap, but in other versions of the shoe, the only thing holding your foot inside is a thin, nude-coloured strap of leather.

It’s the illusion of a shoe that won’t stay on.

However, it was no illusion when I saw a similar shoe at Philip Lim’s SS11 show.

Déjà Vu: Harem if you Dare ‘Em

If I were to grant you three fashion wishes, would you wear these golden harem pants?

Would you choose them the first time?

Ralph Lauren SS09 Gold Harem Pants on exshoesme.com

I fell in love with these at the SS09 Ralph Lauren show.

I know, they are a little beyond my usual garb – but I loved the glitter, toned down with safari khakis.

Would the second sighting of them win you over? With the four million outfits in the SATC2 movie, these still stood out for me.

Would the third time be the charm?

A similar pair turned up on the runway for SS11 – by Parsons grad Alexander Berardi (yes, you are having another déjà vu – but he is not related to Antonio).

Alexander Berardi SS11 Gold Harem Pants on exshoesme.com

Alexander Berardi paired them with black chiffon at this SS11 show.

A little more golden, but the idea didn’t just come out of a magic bottle.

Of course, I still wish for a pair – for those sultry summer nights – when a girl is out for dessert.

Who says you need an actual desert to wear ‘em?

Harem in the city, if you dare ‘em.

Déjà Vu: Tune-ic

Fashion consciousness is a funny thing.

I am amazed at times, at how bits of the same fashion reality stream into one’s consciousness and the serendipitous nature of a virtual wardrobe falling into place.

Late last night, I was going through the Spring Summer 2011 collections in more detail (prepping for Fashion Night this Friday!) and came across this wonderful tunic dress from Alexis Mabille.

Alexis Mabille SS11 Grecian Tunic Dress on exshoesme.com

I'd gladly wear this on a breezy Med holiday.

Then, just this morning, I was catching up on Sart’s photographic adventures and came across this striking image.

Cannes 2011: Déjà Vu Dresses

Amongst the sea breezes and star-gazing, amongst the taking of toasts and teasing tresses, there were more than a handful of deja views from this distant observer, and perhaps even a singing mermaid or two.

Burlesque star Julie Atlas Muz wore something last year that might remind you of this year's Marchesa.
